 Welcome

Winter is upon us in a big way this year with lots of snow and very cold temperatures.

It was a great time to learn about some Arctic animals and how they endure the cold winter days for most of the year.

This is just some of what we created and learned about.

Nocturnal Animals

 Welcome

Another fun and learning week with my little ones.

This past week, we learned about nocturnal animals.  Simple facts for very young ones but a lot of them now know what animals are awake hunting at night.

So here's what we did last week.

Racoon Puppets

I found this cute printout so we glued our puppets together and coloured them.  

(one of my littles thought her raccoon should be wearing a dress)

Stinky Skunk

These were simple skunks we made into puppets.

Bats

The kids really liked this one.

We made a bat cave from an old tissue box.  We glued and coloured our bats and talked about how they fold up their wings to sleep.  

They loved playing with them, folding up the wings and putting them into the box.

Owl

A simple owl to colour.

We all hooted like owls which made us all giggle.

Arctic Animals

 Hello and Welcome

This past week, we learned all about Arctic Animals and made some fun crafts.

The kids truly amazed me at all they already knew about the animals we studied.  I'm glad so much of what we are learning is really sinking in, all while we are having fun.

So here's what we did this past week.

Polar Bear

We used 2 paper plates to create our Polar Bear.  

I cut one for the body then used the 2nd one for the head, ears and snout.

We added some white tissue paper for the fur.

Arctic Owls and Arctic Fox

Here are the cute owl puppets we made using an envelope for the body.

The fox is made by tracing the child's hand and we added a triangle for the head.

Polar Animal Wheel

Here is a Polar Animal wheel we made.  When you turn to the animal, it gives the name below.

I'm sorry that I don't have a printout for this one...I have used it for years and it was in my file.

Ringed Seal

A simple gluing activity using a seal.  Don't you just love the purple eyes lol.

Polar/ Arctic Animals

Well another busy and creative week as we learned about Polar/Arctic animals.

My kiddos were anxious to create and learn about them.  We talked about how they could be camouflaged against the snow if they were white and what they liked to eat.  

So here's what we did.

These fun Polar bears were simply made with some construction paper.  

The heads were folded as to give a 3-D look...so cute and great fine motor as they had to glue on the small snowflakes.

Caribou

These funny caribou puppets were fun to colour...my kids love to colour.

Paper plate polar bear.  

My kids wanted to make another polar bear so where is what we did.  

Cut the paper plates to use for the bear shape then glued on lots of fluffy cotton.  

Arctic Fox

Such a fun and easy fox to create using paper plates.  The head was made with a half plate that I rolled and stapled together.  The nose is a pom-pom.

This is a wheel we created showing all the Polar Animals.

I didn't get a picture of it all assembled but when we put them together, it shows the animal at the top and the name in the open space below.  More fun and learning as my littles ones are starting to read and recognize letters.

Letter Tubes

Last week we did Number Tubes.

This week it was time to do some letter ones.  They really worked hard to find all the letters stickers and place them on the tube.  We made it into a game too, think of a word that starts with that letter then stick it on.

So that's it for this week.

We are moving on to 'Penguins' next week.

As the Weather Changes

I certainly don't feel ready for the weather to change this much.

We have snow on the ground.  My little ones were so excited with the change and were anxious to get out and play in it so that's what we did.  

I think I need to get a new outlook about snow like they have lol.

We have been watching the geese fly south so that's how we started our creative week.

Then, we went on to talk about animals that were nocturnal.

Simple bird craft using a spoon as the head and tail.

Simply cut out the bird shape (shown here in the black), cut a small slit in the base and slide in the spoon.  These also make good birds for creating a mobile.

We glued on some circles and squares as those are shapes we are working on.

Owls

Here are some super easy little owls we made using part of a paper towel roll.

Just bend and tuck the top down to create the ears of the owl.

We talked about what owls liked to eat, how they hunted in the night and there was a lot of hooting going on in the house that day.

Little foxes.

Again, using part of a paper towel roll covered with some brownish paper.  We added the features and a pom-pom nose.  The kids did a little puppet show with them...gotta love when the creative carries over to some dramatic play too.

Sleeping Foxes

This cute template is so easy.  Just print it out and let the kids colour.  To extend this activity, you could create a little den for the fox to sleep in.  

We also talked about how they are nocturnal and sleep in the day, hunt in the night.
